Primary education in Chad is a six-year program leading to elementary school certificate. Children begin schooling at the age of six years. The curricula in primary schools are dominated by French system of education. The students are taught reading, writing, spelling, grammar, mathematics, history, geography, science, and drawing at this level.
Secondary education also follows French model. After completion of primary school / elementary education students can compete for two different types of liberal arts institutions, the collège d'enseignement général (called a collège, or CEG) or the lycée. The collège offered a four-year course of study, and the lycée offered a seven-year program. In both institutions, students took a general examination at the end of four years.
At the end of secondary education, all students took comprehensive exams for the baccalaureate degree, called the bac, an obligatory requirement for admission to a university.
When Chad regained freedom in 1960 there were no university in Chad. The students migrated to countries like Belgium, Senegal, Côte d'Ivoire, Congo and France for earning higher qualification in education, liberal arts, agriculture, and medicine. Chad now has its' own university, University of N'Djamena for providing higher education.
UNESCO and Chad work together in a number of areas. The joint action is particularly strong in Education for All, especially for girls.
